LEADING scorer Adam Cornell scored twice as Bracknell Town recovered from the shock of conceding an early goal to win 3-2 at Lydney on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

The Robins had dropped two points when held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Henley last Tuesday, but produced a much better performance against their Gloucestershire hosts.

“It’s a tough place to go because of the distance you have to travel, but the whole squad acquitted themselves very well,” said manager Mark Tallentire.

“They put in a good performance and thoroughly deserved the three points. We conceded goals in the first few minutes and in the 90th minute, but between those we dominated large parts of the game.”

Lydney had already gone close through Lewis Halford before he set up brother Niall to head the opening goal after five minutes.

The Robins were soon moving the ball around well at a fast pace and deservedly drew level through Seb Bowerman after 10 minutes.

And five minutes later Cornell, pictured above, headed them into the lead following a corner.

Bowerman and Cornell both missed chances, while James McClurg and Kensley Maloney forced keeper Richard Thomas into making smart saves.

“With the chances we had, we should have put the game to bed before half-time,” said Tallentire.

With the Robins failing to turn their superiority into goals, Lydney started to work their way back into the game, only to be caught out by a slick counter-attack which led to Cornell scoring his second goal of the game on 70 minutes.

The home side netted their second just before the whistle with full-back Mason Lewis hammering in a low drive just inside keeper Chris Grace’s far post.

Lydney said Bracknell were “by far the best side” seen at their Swan Road ground this season.

The Robins are currently without an evening game next week, while Binfield take on Highmoor Ibis at the Rivermoor Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Ascot United, who were scheduled to visit Henley last night (Tuesday), take on Thatcham at The Racecourse Ground this Saturday (3pm).
