BRACKNELL Town moved out of the bottom two by beating fellow strugglers Abingdon United 3-1 at Larges Lane, writes Dave Wright.

Admittedly, it was only due to them boasting a superior goal difference than Abingdon, but as they have played seven fewer games, it suggests the Robins will not be seen again on the rung above tailed-off Wokingham & Emmbrook.

With seven points from their last three games, improving Town are closing the gap on the group above them, but still have a lot to do to move out of the relegation zone.

They were not helped on Saturday by the fact two other bottom-eight teams, Ardley and Brackley Town Saints, also won, but Robins are showing the form that should see them climb the table.

Manager Mark Tallentire has turned to experienced players – most of whom have played for him in the past – as he bids to turn things around, and he appears to be succeeding.

His latest signing is Steve Nebbett, who links up again with Danny Oliphant, the pair having previously been joint managers at Larges Lane.

Nebbett, who will also be Tallentire’s number two, was an unused substitute on Saturday, while Oliphant played in midfield.

There have been so many changes at the club that only four players remain from the Bracknell team that won 3-1 at Abingdon in late October.

So Saturday’s win also brought Town’s first double of the season, and it always looked on the cards from the time Adam Cornell put them ahead with just three minutes gone.

It wasn’t the tidiest of goals with Cornell just squeezing the ball inside the right-hand post.

United’s Jack Griffiths was the busier keeper but when the second goal did come along on 36 minutes it was gift wrapped as Griffiths failed to hold Seb Bowerman’s left-wing cross and Dan Money cashed in, having also scored at Abingdon.

After Bracknell keeper Garry Aulsberry had saved from Connor Ingram, the hosts made it 3-0 from a penalty in the 44th minute.

Cornell was brought down on the left-side of the area – United claimed he was outside – and Danny Wing made no mistake from the spot.

The teenage keeper, however, more than atoned for his error in the second half, pulling off two tremendous saves to deny James Suarez and also denying George Lock and Cornwell.

Abingdon, suffering their seventh defeat in a row, pulled a goal back when Ryan Jackson-Wild took advantage of poor defending to fire past Aulsberry.

They had two chances to score again, but Aulsberry was equal to the task.

Robins now face a tough derby with Ascot United at Larges Lane on Sunday (1pm).
