The former assistant manager took over from Ed Carpenter after he left the club by mutual consent last Wednesday on the back of a seven-match winless run.

He inspired his troops to a victory in his first game in charge on Saturday as they eased past struggling Abingdon United 3-1, before beating Holyport 3-0 at Larges Lane.

After the win, the new manager told The News: “On our day we can beat anyone in the league.

“If everyone can stay together and impress on our opponents then who knows where that can take us.

“We are taking one little step at a time and we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves by saying we are going to do this, we’re going to do that.” However, he admitted that he will be looking for his side to outfight other teams with a strong work ethic, which he believes his players already possess.

He said: “Wearing that Bracknell shirt, when I was in the dressing room I’d run through brick walls for my managers and I’m hoping their going to run through brick walls for me. I want that sort of mentality and the boys are well on board.

“I’ve always said we’re maturing and we are a very young team.

“At the start of the season all we could do was try and beat last year when Steve (Nebbett) and Danny (Oliphant) got us to 13th. That was respectable and any improvement on that is a step forward.

“The same group of players are holding together and maturing, and that’s a step forward.” The new boss was boosted by 19-goal striker Shane Cooper-Clark turning down offers from two rival clubs - one of whom was willing to pay the talented marksman - and Pennicott-Bowen praised his hitman after another high-scoring week.

He said: “Shane’s fantastic and he’s absolutely loving it. I love it for him when he scores goals. He’s improved his finishing in training and it’s coming off in games.

“We’ve got the tools and we will work with those. We can’t go bringing in players left, right and centre from different clubs and we don’t want to.

“I want to develop the team and we’ve got and try to consolidate where we are.

“I’ve said to the boys and the management that we’ll have highs and lows this season, so enjoy the highs but when the lows come dig in and stay together as a team, and that’s what we’re doing at the moment.” It was a dream start for the manager, as Bracknell put in a strong performance to cruisee to victory at Abingdon.

The Robins debutant goalkeeper Garry Aulsberry, signed from Binfield last week following an injury to James Hawtree, did well to deny Graham Edney in the second minute.

Bracknell had strong claims for a penalty turned down just three minutes later when Khalid Senussi was brought down in the area.

However, they did not have to wait long to take the lead as a stunning breakaway from an Abingdon corner resulted in Senussi volleying home Michael Watson’s cross from six yards after Tom Barratt’s long ball had released the quick full back down the right flank.

They could have doubled their advantage shortly after when the prolific Cooper-Clark headed straight at United goalkeeper Lee Farrow, before the hosts gradually began to gain a foothold in the game.

Midfielder Josh Crook twice fired wide from long range before Bracknell defender Andre Kelly somehow spooned the ball over the bar from just four yards.

Chances remained at a premium at both ends although Anaclet Odhiambo fired wide from 12 yards for Abingdon just before the break.

With the wind at their backs, the hosts began the second-half in positive fashion and had a goal disallowed when Edney was correctly adjudged off side.

Bracknell pushed home their advantage when Cooper-Clark bagged his 17th of a highly productive campaign.

The league’s top scorer curling home a free-kick which Farrow should have done better with after Kennie Chamberlain was fouled.

The Robins continued to play some fine football and looked incisive up front, but they were hit by a sucker punch when Ellis Langford reduced the arrears with a magnificent 30-yard thunderbolt which nestled in the top left hand corner.

However, Bracknell were not to be denied and an inspired substitution saw Harry Brown head home Jordan Rowland’s cross minutes after coming on.

There was still time for Cooper-Clark to hit the left hand post with a fine header from Sam Whiting’s corner.

It was another comfortable victory at home to Holyport on Tuesday, with Cooper-Clark bagging another brace to take his tally to an astonishing 19 for the season.

The prolific striker opened the scoring before the visitors’ own key marksman Jamie West was sent off.

The Robins made it 2-0 when Cooper-Clark’s cross was fumbled and fellow frontman Kennie Chamberlain was on hand to slot home.

And another trademark 25-yard free kick from Cooper-Clark added a gloss to the scoreline late on as Bracknell moved up to 10th in the table.

The Robins host Highworth Town next Tuesday (7.45pm).
