FINCHAMPSTEAD maintained their excellent Hellenic League Division One East form as they hammered Chalfont Wasps 6-0 at the Memorial Ground.

Jon Laugharne's men started positively and created an early chance, only for Harry Swabey to be caught offside.

The same player then had a shot blocked after collecting a pass from Dan Blatchford, and from the resulting corner his header whistled across the face of goal.

Wasps then counter-attack but Tom Bryant saved with ease, before Freddie Barron put Finch in front on 10 minutes with an effort that goalkeeper Justin Higgs should have dealt with.

Greg Alexander extended the lead five minutes later when he blasted home a 35-yard stunner, and Finch could have gone further in front when Swabey headed wide from Barron's cross.

The impressive Swabey then dribbled almost half the length of the field until he was fouled but the free-kick was unproductive.

Wasps then broke away forcing Bryant to come off his line and clear, while at the other end Jack Cullen blocked James Wright's shot.

Barron completed a fine team move to put Finch further ahead on the half hour, and he almost grabbed another just before the break when his shot went narrowly over the bar.

Greg Alexander was denied by Higgs early in the second half, and Gary Callaway then headed wide.

Barron's useful cross then took four attempts for the Wasps defence to clear, he then had a goal disallowed for offside.

After 65 minutes, Matt Wright scored Finch's fourth goal before Adam Barnard's effort missed at the far post.

Swabey took a long 35-yard shot which scudded past the upright, before Finch introduced Gavin Rolls in place of Alexander.

Skipper Barnard collected a pass from Barron but was tripped for a free-kick, although the hosts were unable to capitalise.

With time slipping away Swabey was replaced by Nathan Onreat-Wells, and both he fellow substitute Rolls scored two goals in two minutes to continue the rout.

Finch were awarded a penalty for hand-ball late on, but Barron's spot-kick was superbly saved by Higgs low to his right as the home side had to settle for an emphatic 6-0 success.

Finchampstead host Fairford Town in the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup this coming Saturday (1.45pm).
