DUE to the association banning the use of keepnets on the River Kennet following low dissolved oxygen levels and high temperatures, the decision was made to move the match to the Kennet & Avon Canal at Froxfield, writes Alan Hughes.

A total of 31 anglers were booked in for this match and the matchday weather was dry, sunny and very hot with a slight breeze blowing.

The water had a good colour and was towing strongly due to the passage of boats.

Total match weight on the day was 105lbs 14ozs at an average weight of 3lbs 6ozs per angler. The top three teams on the day were TRBLAS with 32lbs 6ozs, Courage with 29lbs 10ozs and Reading Fishing Club with 15lbs 13ozs.

The match was won by Mick Donohoe of Courage.

Fishing the second peg above overhead power cables on the “Short Pound” section on Froxfield A section, he banked more than 200 small roach along with a few perch.

Fishing pole tactics, feeding groundbait and pinkie, with red maggot and pinkie on the hook to record a weight of 6lbs 14ozs.

Peter Godfrey of TRBLAS and Andy White of Courage were joint second overall.

Godfrey was fishing the last peg in the Turning Bay on Froxfield A section. He banked more than 220 small roach fishing pole tactics, feeding groundbait and pinkie, with red maggot and pinkie on the hook.

White was fishing the first peg below the overhead power cables on the “Short Pound” Section on Froxfield A section and also banked more than 200 small roach along with a few perch.

The same tactics were used and both anglers recorded a weight of 6lbs 2ozs.

Section weights: A (wides and short pound) – 36lbs 7ozs; B (turning bay and top end B section) – 41lbs 10ozs, C (Middle of B section to broken bridge) – 27lbs 13ozs.

TRBLAS top the Club Championship with 57lbs 12ozs, followed by Courage with 47lbs 13ozs and in third place are Reading Fishing Club with 77lbs 13ozs.

The Individual Aggregate Points Trophy is shared between Andy Chapman, Godfrey and John Jackson with 18 points each.

Ian Claridge heads the weight table with 11lbs 1oz, but not far behind is Jackson with 10lbs 6ozs.
