TOM Lawton won East Berkshire’s men championship in dramatic style on Saturday.

He secured the Armstrong Medal in a sudden-death play-off on the first hole, having returned a gross 70 in his first round and 69 in the second for a 36-hole total of 139, one over par.

The play-off was brought about after Bradley Tuckett had holed a 25-yard putt on the 18th hole for birdie returning a 64, the best round of the day, which included an eagle and four birdies, a big improvement on his first round of 75.

Lawton went off first on the 299-yard hole and found the green, while Tuckett slightly pulled his tee-shot left and short of the green into the rough.

Tuckett could not find the green with his second shot, while Lawton putted up close to the hole to secure a birdie three to win the club’s title for the second time.

Third place went to Kevin Freeman with rounds of 72 and 70 for 142.

The Don Sampson Trophy for the best nett score overall went to Jack Carling with 66 and 70 for 139 (one over) with Paul Donnelly second on 141 (75 and 66) and David Forsyth third with 142 (69 and 73).

East Berkshire’s ladies championship, for the Garnett Bowl, was won by Laura Webb for an amazing 15th year in a row.

After the morning round she was three shots behind Gabi Heuchel, who returned a level par 71.

Playing head-to-head in the afternoon, Webb ran out the winner by one shot with rounds of 74 and 77 for a total of 151, while Heuchel finished with rounds of 71 and 81.

Heuchel won the handicap title, earning the Amor Cup, with nett rounds of 63 and 73 for 136 (six under) with Jayne Quinn finishing second on four under following rounds of 70 and 68 for 138.
