BRACKNELL Town players jetted out to Marbella on Wednesday for a well-deserved break, writes Dave Wright.

It’s their reward for gaining promotion following a season which the Robins crowned last Monday by lifting the Hellenic League Cup with a 3-1 win over champions Thatcham.

Earlier in the year, chairman Kayne Steinborn-Busse had promised them the club would make a financial contribution to the short break if they secured promotion.

He said: “The lads have had a magnificent season and I am only too pleased the club can offer some reward. They thoroughly deserve it.”

The players are spending four days in the Spanish resort with striker Adam Cornell revealing: “We have a lot planned.”

In addition to promotion, the Robins are now also celebrating winning the League Cup for the second year running.

They proved too good for FA Vase finalists Thatcham with goals from Carl Withers, Cornell and substitute Elliott Legg, while former Bracknell star Shane Cooper-Clark replied for the Kingfishers from the penalty spot.

“This is the icing on the cake,” said player-manager Carl Davies.

“It has been a long, hard season and we deserved some sort of silverware.

“We pushed them so close in the league and I think we were the better team on Monday. I don’t think anyone can begrudge us our win.”

Davies felt the penalty awarded against him for his challenge on Elliott Ekow by referee Lisa Benn was “harsh.”

He continued: “When they equalised, I was expecting a barrage from them but it never came.”

Shortly afterwards, came the moment that changed the game with coach Geoff Warner taking off scorer Cornell and sending on Legg to play wide out on the right with Joe Grant moving inside and Kensley Maloney back into midfield.

“It was game changing, so all credit to Geoff and Nebbs (Steve Nebbett), that’s why they are there,” said Davies.

Within two minutes Legg had set up the second goal for Cornell and he went on to score a late third to seal a famous victory for the Larges Lane men.

The student is returning to America in August, but Davies says he will return to Bracknell in November.

“I am pleased about that as he is a very good player,” stated the player-manager who said he was “delighted” that Steinborn-Busse had kept his promise about contributing to this week’s trip to Marbella.

“I knew he would as that is the type of person he is. We could not have a better chairman,” concluded Davies.
