A BRACKNELL man is looking for new sponsors to help him compete in the World Powerlifting Championships in Malta.

Terry Matthews earned the right to represent Great Britain at the tournament this coming June by winning the British Championships last month.

The dedicated 34-year-old, who works for Halford’s Autocentres as a trainer, is now appealing for help to fund the trip.

Matthews, who is also set to compete in the European Championships in Ireland this year, said: “I would love to be a multiple world champion, but one step at a time.

“Unfortunately, powerlifting isn’t a wealthy sport so I’m currently looking for a sponsor to help with kit and training costs, as well as travel costs.

“I’m really proud to represent British powerlifting. It’s a dream come true and I just want to make everyone proud that’s helped me.

‘It’s a dream come true and I want to make everyone proud’ “Powerlifting is my life. I live it and breath it and I have trained very hard for what I have achieved so far.”

Matthews is coached by Andy Bowman, a multiple British and World Champion, and is based at Bodyzone Gym in Bracknell, who have provided support throughout his powerlifting career.

“Andy guided me to my first British title and I couldn’t be more grateful,” explained Matthews.

“He has been a real role model by keeping me focused and making sure I’m always where I need to be.

“He’s been there every step of the way and, being a former World Champion, I am lucky to have him in my corner.

“Bodyzone Gym have some great athletes training there and the owner has sponsored me with kit in the past.

“Work have also been supportive and issued me special holiday to compete at the World Championships in Malta which I am now focussing on.

“I am realising a dream and if anybody is able to help it would be greatly appreciated.”
