ASCOT United reached the second round of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup with a 2-0 victory at Wallingford Town on Saturday.

In truth, the visitors should have been out of sight before a late double sealed their progress, with Mo Davies seeing an early effort chalked off for offside before striking a post.

Simon Matthews in the hosts’ goal saved from both James Goodey and Davies, before Samir Regragui struck the cross-bar.

Regragui probed again twice before half time – seeing a shot and free-kick both saved – but it remained goalless at the interval.

The second half began with Davies shooting wide, but Wallingford would soon threaten when Euan Aitchison headed narrowly wide from Will Clements’ cross.

Davies, Goodey and Regragui would threaten again for Ascot, although Yellamen’ goalkeeper Rhys Forster also saved well from Aitchison.

Goodey might have given Ascot the lead after 69 minutes only for his shot to drift inches wide of a post after good work from Davies, although Wallingford saw penalty appeals waved away at the other end when Ross Butler went down in the area.

Forster made another easy save from Butler as Wallingford threatened again, but the lively Davies saw two efforts blocked in quick succession as Ascot sought victory in normal time.

And, so they did.

Firstly, Goodey found the top right-hand corner of the net after picking up the ball on the right and cutting inside the defence and firing home – 87 minutes played – before Ben Hodges and Regragui linked up well for Davies to calmly slot home a deserved goal in injury time and wrap the tie up.
