ANYTHING you can do, we can do better – that was the message sent out by Binfield in their 4-3 FA Cup win over Chichester on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

City’s opening goal in this extra preliminary round tie was cancelled out by Sean Moore and then Brad Pagliaroli made it 2-1 by half-time.

The visitors drew level with an excellent free-kick, but two minutes later Danny Langford restored Binfield’s lead with a fine effort and James Knight then popped up to make it 4-2.

Moles did concede a late third, but Roger Herridge’s men held on for a deserved win and they are rewarded with another home tie, this time against Horndean, a week on Saturday.

“It was a great win, we enjoyed it,” the manager commented.

He had been disappointed with the 2-0 league defeat at Wantage last Tuesday and must have been a little concerned when the Sussex side took a 14th-minute lead through Dave Herbert.

However, Binfield responded well. Five minutes later they equalised through Moore and scoring opportunities went begging at both ends before Pagliaroli produced an excellent finish to put them ahead just before half-time.

A well-placed free-kick from Ellis Martin brought the Citizens back on level terms on 65 minutes, but it took just two minutes for Langford to restore Binfield’s lead.

With Gary Smith and Jeff Brown outstanding at centre-back, Moles always looked capable of keeping their visitors at bay as they looked to save the game.

Inspirational skipper Knight (pictured) increased his side’s lead on 77 minutes, firing home after Langford’s effort had been blocked.

But that wasn’t the end of the scoring as Scott Jones pulled one back in the 89th minute, referee Carl Rooney allowing play to continue as home defender Ali Dickie lay injured in the penalty area.

There was still time for Chichester’s Rob Hutchings to be sent off after looking to stamp on Charlie Tuttle.

Speaking to the News after the game, Herridge said: “There were a lot of good performances out there today.

“Danny scored a great goal, Sean was a real handful, young Charlie at left back, Brownie and Gary, our two centre halves, were big and strong.

“Young keeper Matty Hill has done a good job, he could not have done anything about their three goals. We are now looking forward to the next round.

“We know this is a competition we can’t win, but we are conscious of the rewards on offer for teams that win matches. The money can make a big difference.”
