WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook battled to a gutsy 0-0 draw at Woodley United despite playing the majority of their Hellenic League Division One East clash with 10 men.

Sumas were dealt a major blow midway through the first half when Jake Bailey was dismissed for a second bookable offence after tangling with Matt Jones, and they were then indebted to goalkeeper Sean Woodward for keeping the scores level when he saved from Liam Wilson.

At the other end, Dan Carter and Ben Broadhurst came close for the visitors in a dour opening 45 minutes.

United created their best chance of the game early in the second half when a clipped through ball sent Jones clear. He went past Woodward and pulled the ball back to Danny Horscroft, but he sliced wide from eight yards.

Josh Drew then forced Woodward to deal with a dangerous cross, while a rare venture into the Woodley final third for Sumas saw Elliott Rushforth test United keeper Alex Reed.

Jake Nicholls shot wide for Woodley and with the game in the final 15 minutes United had two decent chances to go ahead. Horscroft prodded wide from 12 yards before Drew headed a Prestidge cross over.

More Woodley pressure followed. A quickly taken free-kick released Horscroft who saw his shot well saved by Woodward, while Drew missed the target when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

A fine move involving Guze, Horscroft and Drew saw the latter tap home from close range, only to see the goal ruled out as Horscroft had strayed offside when receiving the pass from Guze, and Wokingham held on to secure a point.

Wokingham & Emmbrook host Chalfont Wasps in the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup on Saturday (3pm), before travelling to Henley Town in the Reading Senior Cup on Monday (7.45pm).
