READING FC Under 23 celebrated a memorable 2-0 win against Manchester United in Premier League 2 on Sunday.

It was a major scalp for Martin Kuhl's side as United had won the Under 21 Premier League last season before it was reformed over the summer.

But the visitors deserved their victory at Leigh Sports Village thanks to goals from 18-year-old duo Gabriel Osho and Sam Smith.

Royals named a youthful side with Andrija Novakovich, 20, their only non-teenager and 16-year-old Tom Holmes making his full debut.

Kuhl's side went close early on when a Josh Barrett effort was cleared off the United line before Luke Southwood made a superb save to deny Callum Gribbin at the other end.

Reading knocked on the door again when Novakovich's header was palmed away by United keeper Kieran O'Hara.

The deadlock was finally broken thanks to a glancing header from Osho from Barrett's free-kick.

United searched for an equaliser after the break, but Southwood did well to tip a Scott McTominay effort over the bar.

But the home side fell further behind soon after when former United youngster Smith sent a looping header over O'Hara from Barrett's flag-kick.

Royals went close to adding a third when Barrett fired narrowly wide and then tested O'Hara, but Kuhl's side had already done enough to claim an impressive victory that sent them above United into eighth in the table.

Reading U23s travel to Stoke City this Saturday (2pm).

Reading U23: Southwood, Holmes, Richards, Osho, Andresson, Holsgrove, Frost, Rinomhota, Barrett, Smith, Novakovich. Subs not used: Driscoll, Medford-Smith, Shokunbi, Rollinson, Vancooten.

Reading Under 18s

READING Under 18s lost 3-0 to Norwich City at Hogwood Park with a very youthful side on Saturday.

Boss David Dodds used the match to blood a number of Academy youngsters, having already guaranteed a top-four finish in Under 18 Premier League South.

Jack Nolan and Conor Lawless, both aged 15, were given a run out, as were 16-year-old pair Jack Buchanan and Shamar Moore.

All three Canaries goals came before the interval, and Reading hope to bounce back this Saturday when they host Brighton (12pm).
