GREAT Hollands Ladies won the Royal Berkshire Top Club Championship after beating Reading 71-70 (6-2 on points) at Burghfield.

The eventual winners began well as Jo Sanders overcame Val Oakley 21-16 to pick up two points for her side.

Great Hollands also won the triples as Ann Neville, Sheila Ledbury and Liz Austin triumphed 19-12 against the trio of Sue Griffin, Stella Rushton and Yvonne Hailstone.

However, Reading hit back in the fours to cut the gap to 4-2 on points.

Annie Byles, Eileen Fulbrook, Carol Newman and Linda Robinson proved too strong for Lorraine Capon, Olive Bambury, Lol Street and Rita Littleford, Reading prevailing 24-11.

With the contest going to the final match, Great Hollands held their nerve in the pairs as Rita Hills and Sheila Lee won 20-18 against Janet Allen and Jill Hardie, securing the title for their side.

Great Hollands Linnets lost 58-50 (8-2) to Maidenhead Town in the Thames Valley Ladies League.

Rita Littleford, Ann Neville and Rita Hills had the only winning rink (29-12), while Sheila Lee, Lorraine Capon and Olive Bambury lost 23-13, and Jose Chippendale, Sheila Readings and Liz Austin lost 23-8.

The TVL Wrens beat Pangbourne 55-40 (7-3) to secure top place in Division Three. Sheila Ledbury had the highest winning rink (23-7), Bridget Cruickshank drew (16-16) and Sheila Stickland narrowly lost (17-16).

  • WOKINGHAM BC held a successful Finals Weekend as club champions were crowned.

Chris Holliday defeated Martin O’Connor 21-11 to win the men’s title, while Teresa O’Connor downed Shirley Dutton by the same score in the women’s event.

In the men’s pairs David Smith and Andrew Cullington edged past Martin O’Connor and Chris McFarlane 21-19, while it was easier for Anne-Maries Murray and Sandra Thompson in the women’s pairs, as they beat Glyn Carroway and Anne Parker 21-9.

Murray and Paul Dollery were beaten in the mixed pairs by the O’Connors (23-19), while Gerry Deeves scraped the men’s senior singles 21-20 against Sam Welsh in an entertaining game.
