ASAMOAH Gyan has seen his shock move to Reading FC break down after failing a medical.

The 30-year-old Ghana striker was put through his paces by the Royals at the club's Hogwood Park training ground yesterday.

But it is believed Gyan did not meet boss Jaap Stam's expectations and was several weeks away from reaching match fitness.

It means Gyan's move to Reading on a season-long loan from Chinese club Shanghai SIPG, where he earns a reported £225,000 per week, has fallen through.

Gyan had also been linked with a move back to Sunderland, whom he left in 2012 to join Al Ain in Dubai, as well as Championship side Fulham.

Stam is hoping to bring in reinforcements in attack before tomorrow's transfer deadline after Deniss Rakels broke his ankle in last week's EFL Cup win against MK Dons.

With summer signings Yakou Meite and Joseph Mendes also injured, Stam's options up front have been severely limited in recent weeks.

Yann Kermorgant, who scored a late winner at Cardiff City on Saturday, has been leading the Royals line.

Meanwhile, the Reading Chronicle understands rumours of Cardiff City's interest in winger Garath McCleary are wide of the mark.

McCleary, currently on international duty with Jamaica, was being linked with the South Wales club, but remains a big part of Stam's future plans.

Reading have also denied they are looking to sell Chris Gunter, 27, in the transfer window after reports emerged suggesting the club was attempting to cash-in on the Wales full back.
