DANNY Williams has held talks with Reading FC over a new contract.

The 27-year-old midfielder revealed he has discussed the possibility of a new deal with Royals director of football, Brian Tevreden.

USA international Williams refused to divulge the finer details of the conversation and whether a firm offer was on the table.

Williams has entered the final year of his current deal and, unless he signs a new one, he could leave on a free at the end of this season, just as Hal Robson-Kanu did earlier this summer.

Williams explained: “The problem is I don't really like to talk about it because there will always be speculation, especially when you are in the last year of your contract.

“There is always speculation about me leaving, but as far as I'm concerned I have a contract with Reading.

“I heard I was going in the winter when someone came in for me so the only thing I can focus on is my football and playing well for the team.

“At the moment we are not winning, and that's all I am focussed on. We will see about the rest, I have another year left with Reading.”

But Williams confirmed conversations have taken place over a new Royals deal.

“We have had talks, obviously,” he explained. “But I have a year left and it's the same as Hal Robson-Kanu last season.

“There will always be speculation. Obviously I had talks with Brian [Tevreden], but everything stays internal now.

“I don't want to speak about it, I just want to concentrate on my football and see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Williams has been impressed with the impact boss Jaap Stam has made since arriving at the club earlier this summer as Brian McDermott's replacement.

“The atmosphere is amazing, everyone is getting on well,” added Williams.

“We all respect the gaffer because he has a big presence in the changing room.

“All the new lads who came in are doing a good job. None of them are shy and the feeling is good.”

And he added: “I have played under four different managers with Reading now, I've lost count really.

“Every manager is different but so far I admit Jaap Stam is doing an excellent job.

“It's not easy after the last two season we have had which were frustrating for the fans and most of all for us players because we were not delivering on the pitch.

“So I think the manager is doing an excellent job and with the new additions we have it is going to be an exciting season.”

Reading hope to end a run of three Championship matches without a win when they travel to Cardiff City this Saturday.
