READING FC have signed Liechtenstein midfielder Sandro Wieser on a three-year deal.

The 23-year-old is a free agent having been released by Swiss top-flight club FC Thun earlier in the summer.

The left-footer helped FC Thun finish sixth in the division, but was allowed to leave on a free.

Wieser completed a medical at Madejski Stadium yesterday, only hours before Jaap Stam's Royals crashed 4-1 at Newcastle United.

Wieser becomes Stam's ninth summer signing after and Danzell Gravenberch, Joey van den Berg, Anssi Jaakkola, Joseph Mendes, John Swift, Roy Beerens, Yakou Meite and Callum Harriott.

Stam said: "Sandro is a left-footed defensive midfield player who has been playing his football out in Switzerland.

“He is a good passer of the ball, he has a good physique, good technique and I'm sure he will prove a good addition to the squad."

Wieser joined the FC Basel Academy in 2006 and progressed to the first team before moving to Bundesliga outfit TSG Hoffenheim in 2012.

There, he made his senior debut when he came off the bench at Bayern Munich to partner new Reading team-mate Danny Williams in midfield.

Wieser was also loaned out to Austrian side SV Ried and Swiss club FC Aarau, before sealing his move to Thun in 2015.

He has been capped 33 times by Liechtenstein, with his only goal coming in a 1-1 draw with Moldova during Euro 2016 qualifying last summer.

Sandro, who will wear the No.17 shirt, is due to train with his new Royals team-mates for the first time later today ahead of Saturday's Championship home game against Brighton (3pm ko).
