OLIVER Norwood helped create Northern Ireland history after their 2-0 win against Ukraine in last night's Euro 2016 clash.

It was the Ulstermen's first ever victory in the European Championships, and Royals midfielder Norwood played a key role.

Norwood, who has been linked with a summer move to Hull City, sent over a pint-point cross for Gareth McAuley to head Michael O'Neill's men in front at Stade des Lumières.

Niall McGinn added a second late on to seal a memorable Group C win, which saw both teams taken off at one stage due to a hailstorm in Lyon.

Northern Ireland, beaten 1-0 by Poland in their opening fixture, face a tough task to qualify for the next stage as their final game is against Germany on Tuesday.

However, Reading right-back Chris Gunter is still hoping to reach the next round with Wales despite yesterday's last-gasp 2-1 defeat to England in Lens.

Gareth Bale had fired Chris Coleman's Dragons ahead, but second half goals from substitutes Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge earned Roy Hodgson's Three Lions their first win of the tournament.

It means England now top Group B ahead of their clash against Slovakia on Monday, while second-placed Wales take on a pointless Russia on the same day.

And Gunter remains upbeat about Wales' chances of going through.

He wrote on his Instagram site: “This is our journey. Keep those heads up, and get ready for Monday.

“We're Wales, as if we haven't had set backs before. Well and truly in this tournament. Also congratulations England.”

Hal Robson-Kanu, who was released by Reading at the end of last season, also started for Wales yesterday and has been heavily linked with Celtic and Swansea City.

Meanwhile, Reading midfielder Stephen Quinn's Republic of Ireland face Belgium in Group E this Saturday.
