READING FC are lining up a seven-figure bid for Liverpool youngster Sergi Canos.

Royals boss Brian McDermott has been heavily linked with the 19-year-old wideman after talks over a new contract with the Reds recently broke down.

Canos is well known to McDermott and Reading supporters having scored at Madejski Stadium in December during loan club Brentford’s 2-1 win.

The talented Spaniard spent the entire season at Griffin Park in order to gain first-team experience and he netted seven times in 40 league and cup appearances.

It is thought Royals scouts have been watching Canos closely over the past few months, with McDermott eager to strengthen out wide following the departure of Hal Robson-Kanu and Ola John.

Robson-Kanu left Madejski Stadium last week when his contract expired, while John has returned to Benfica after a season-long loan with the Royals.

Canos’s value has undoubtedly risen after making his Liverpool debut as a late substitute in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at West Brom.

But with one year remaining on his contract and with talks stalling over a new deal, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp could be willing to let him go for around £1 million.

Klopp told the media he was impressed by the youngster’s attitude throughout his loan with Brentford.

“He did really good at Brentford,” said the German coach. “The Championship is quite a strong league and it is difficult for young players to come through, but he did well.”

McDermott is facing a crucial transfer window following the departure of six loan players at the end of last season plus the release of Anton Ferdinand, Simon Cox and Robson-Kanu after their contracts expired.

As well as strong interest in Canos, Royals have also been linked with Walsall striker Tom Bradshaw, 23, Barnsley winger, Adam Hammill, 28, and Oxford United’s attacking midfielder, Kemar Roofe, 23.

McDermott held ‘positive’ talks with Reading’s Thai owners recently and he is confident of receiving their backing in the transfer market.

“We understand where we are and the summer will take care of itself,” he declared. “We’ll see what players we have left at the end of May then go from there.

“We’ll have to discuss who is going to be here and who isn’t.

“I don’t know when we’ll do our business. I always like to do it early, but generally it doesn’t happen that way.”

Reading, though, may face a battle to keep hold of Northern Ireland midfielder, Oliver Norwood, after rumours linking him with a £3m move to Premier League Bournemouth.
