NEW Eversley CC captain Chris Last is targeting a top-four finish after his side picked up their first Thames Valley League Division 2b victory of the season against Chenies & Latimer, writes Richard Ashton.

The Boars were relegated from Division One at the end of last season, and Last – who has replaced Scott Dyer in the hotseat – admitted the club is in a rebuilding phase.

But they were given a boost by defeating Chenies by four wickets on Saturday, with Last leading from the front with three wickets and 30 runs.

He told the News: “We can only really take it game by game but if we can keep a core eight players together, I’ve got realistic hopes of being in the top four.

“With the way Finchampstead (2nds) have recruited and how well they have started, they would be favourites to go up.

“We’re in for a challenge trying to rebuild, but I think we’ll get there if we can hold onto guys.

“Availability is going to be tough for all sides in our league this year so if we just plug away and keep trying to win games we’ll see where were at with four games left. If we’re up there at the end we’ll give it a good go.”

Last has brought the likes of Ben Saville, Shane Green and Gareth Cummings back into the first team and added: “There are challenges as captain but I’m trying to do it my way and get a bit of the Eversley way back. We’re trying to start a new era.”
