SUNNINGDALE Bowling Club began their season with the annual Captain v President match ending in a one-shot victory for the President’s team.

Inter-club friendly matches started with the visit of Windsor Great Park Bowling Club for the first leg of the Ascot Cup. 

In mostly dry but chilly conditions the home team won 114-88. Top rink for Sunningdale was L.Green, K.Johnson, D.Allston (skip).

The second leg takes place next month.

The club is holding an open day for anyone keen to take up the sport this Saturday, between 11am and 4pm.

Visitors of all ages are welcome and will be provided with free tuition and reduced price membership, and are asked to bring flat soled shoes. 

Members will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the club.

A further session will take place on Friday May, 27 from 6.30pm to 8.00pm.

GREAT Hollands BC won a thrilling local derby 90-89 against Wokingham on Wednesday. 

Great Hollands won three rinks; George Harris’s (24-18), Brian Rammell’s (18-13) and Graham Cripps’s (19-15). The rink skipped by Dave Sutherby was drawn 18-18 and the one by Tony Morton was lost 25-11.

The club lost 98-68 in a friendly at Shiplake on Saturday, winning only two of the five rinks – the ones skipped by Morton (19-10) and Jose Chippendale (17-16). 

Skips on the three losing rinks were Terry Harmer (25-9), Gerry Austin (27-9), and Mary Bowden (20-14). The club won all five rinks for an overall 115-78 victory against Suttons. 

The rink scores were Bob Rhodes, 25-20, Dick Fisher, 19-13, Eddie Readings, 28-13, David Brown, 23-13 and Graham Cripps, 20-19.

Great Hollands won a further two mixed triples friendlies on Sunday.

They beat Hawley 104-61 with all five rinks successful. Skips were Richard Clark (17-14), Sheila Readings (27-15), Bill Beale (26-10), Brown (15-12) and Fred Payne (19-10). 

Great Hollands won 90-65 at Windlesham, winning three rinks – Ray Furnell’s (19-10), Jose Chippendale’s (16-8) and Mike Stickland’s (23-9). The losing rinks were skipped by Eddie Readings (19-18) and Harmer (19-14).

The club held a successful open day on Bank Holiday Monday.

Despite the cold weather, an encouraging number of new players turned out to take advantage of the coaching on offer by current members and to enjoy a barbecue and other refreshments.
