WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook moved into the second round of the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup with a 2-1 victory at Letcombe.

The first half proved an even affair with both defences on top and little goalmouth action, although Sumas largely had the better of play.

But it was the hosts who conjured the best move in the final minute of the half when an exchange of passes gave Adam Claydon the opening, but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Sam Woodward.

The second half produced more chances, and Wokingham almost took the lead when Elliott Rushforth`s shot ran across the face of the goal, going just wide of the far post.

The visitors did take the lead after 56 minutes, however, following a low cross from the left wing.

Sean Webb’s outstretched leg deflected the ball past keeper Danny Joyce, leaving Sam Bateman (pictured) with a tap-in from close range to make it 1-0.

Wokingham & Emmbrook had a chance to increase their lead shortly afterwards when Josh Pearson broke clear, only for his powerful shot to go over the bar.

Sumas did double their advantage midway through the half, though, when a fine passing move released James Payne on the right, with the home defence appealing in vain for an offside flag.

He showed no nerves to coolly finish past Joyce, and although Richard Claydon pulled a goal back late in the game with a long-range free kick which eluded everybody and crept inside the far post, Dan Bateman and Matt Egglestone’s men held on for the victory.

Basement boys Wokingham & Emmbrook will look to begin their attempts to pull off a miraculous escape from Hellenic League Premier Division relegation when they welcome Royal Wootton Bassett to The Triangle on Saturday (3pm).
