WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook were beaten 2-1 at Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday despite playing against 10 men for most of the match.

After just eight minutes home keeper Curtis Meare was sent off for bringing down Luke Scope just inside the penalty area.

Jake Butler hammered the spot kick past stand-in keeper Steve Yeardley to raise Sumas' hopes of securing only their second Hellenic League win of the season.

But they conceded two second-half goals, with the winner coming in the last five minutes, and they remain at the bottom of the Premier Division table.

They were, however, unfortunate not to have grabbed a point with Gary Sargeant having two 'goals' disallowed during the game, which was played on an excellent playing surface at Wootton's new ground.

It was a plucky performance from the Sumas, who were once again weakened by injuries and player unavailability.

Having more of the play, they maintained their one-goal lead until the 56th minute and then it came from a penalty with Will Day adjudged to have handled the ball. Steve Olphert gave keeper Sean Woodward no chance from the spot.

Wokingham squandered two chances to regain the lead before the Wiltshire side struck an 86th-minute winner through Sam Packer, who took advantage of a poor clearance by the Sumas.

Sargeant, who had been denied late in the first half due to offside, was out of luck again just before the end.

He headed home a corner from defender Jordan Rowland, a new signing from Bracknell Town, but it was ruled out for a foul, although Sumas' Luke Scope was also having his

shirt pulled at the time.

It was typical of the bad luck that Wokingham have been enduring in recent weeks.

Having played high-riding Thatcham at home last night, Sumas will be hoping for a change of luck this Saturday when they entertain Division One West strugglers Shrivenham at the Triangle ground in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase.
