Sean McDermottroe grabbed a hat-trick as Redingensians Rams swept aside an under-strength Bracknell 81-0 in their first pre-season friendly of the season.

Rams raced to a 40-0 lead in a breath-taking first 20 minutes and went on to amass 13 tries as they gained a measure of revenge for the league defeat they suffered at Lily Hill Park earlier this year.

In a match of four quarters, winger McDermottroe opened the scoring after three minutes.

Then a torrent of tries followed from Brown, Taylor, Samir Kharbouch, James Baker and Luke Flower, who landed five conversions.

Bracknell had their best spell in the second period but failed to pierce the visitors’ defence before Reuben Norville crossed for Rams.

Then McDermottroe completed his treble with two tries, 17-year-old Gareth Sim went over and the best try of the game came from former Leeds Rhinos Academy player Josh Sunley.

His mazy run left the home defence in disarray and with Flower taking his conversion tally to seven it was 69-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Brown and Nightingale crossed in a curtailed final period and Harry Stapleton put over a conversion.

Redingensians coach Mike Tewksbury had warned against complacency as his men - who will compete in National League Two South for the first time this year - showed an intensity which Bracknell, one league below, failed to match in any department.

He said: “This is a step in the right direction but there is still a lot of work to be done. We have to make further progress on our two match trip to Wales next weekend. “

Yet he admitted he was impressed by the display as several of the new recruits caught the eye. They included flanker Craig Nightingale, lock Ollie Taylor, against his old club, and Berkshire under-20 scrum-half Sam Brown.

Bracknell will hope to put in an improved performance when they welcome Richmond to Lily Hill Park this coming Saturday (3pm).
