Captain Dan Marles won the toss and elected to bat, but openers Simon Bell and Matt Jones found the going slow before the former was bowled by Robbie Shurmer to leave Finch 29-1 in the 11th over.

Jones and Marles shared a fifty partnership for the second wicket, but spinner Joe Thomas then removed the skipper and Billy Rogers to reduce the hosts to 82-3.

Andrew House hung around with Jones, who continued to bat well before eventually being dismissed for a well-constructed 70.

Lockie Ferguson (27) was second topscorer for Finch, but the lower order fell away alarmingly and the home side finished their 50 overs on 167-9. Thomas (3-50), Joe White (2-24) and Martin Coetzee (2-22) were the star performers for Tew.

In reply, White (79) and fellow opener Matthew Clark (62no) found the going far easier and breezed past the century mark in the 24th over.

White’s fine all-round performance was ended by Max Uttley (2-33) with the score on 143 – Marles the catcher – and the same bowler then knocked over Jordan Garrett cheaply.

However, Great & Little Tew regrouped and Harry Smith joined Clark in seeing their side home with more than 13 overs to spare to secure a comfortable victory.

Finchampstead 2nds were also heavily beaten by six wickets in their opening Thames Valley League Division One game at Old Merchant Taylors. Gary Loveday (45) and Russell Lane (32) gave Finch a reasonable platform, but Rehan Hassan (7-34) checked their progress and the visitors were eventually dismissed for 142, a target OMT knocked off in 37 overs.

Newbury thrashed newly-promoted Finchampstead 3rds by 139 runs in Division 3a.

Ian Rose (3-40) was Finch’s best bowler, but the visitors racked up a competitive 228-9, before skittling their opponents for just 89.

In Division 7a, Newbury 2nds scored 186-8 in their 47 overs against Finchampstead 4ths. Youngster Cameron Ellis took 3-9 on debut while Steve West claimed 4-27, but Finch collapsed to 114 all out in their reply.
