Kew won the toss and on a green pitch that offered plenty for the seamers soon had the upper hand as Eversley were reduced to 40-4.

Michael Dunn removed Chris Last and Phil Wise, while Kidron Thomas bowled with real pace and venom accounting for Mesh Sayed and captain Scott Dyer.

Tom Howarth played extremely well with a maturity well beyond his 17 years to repair some of the damage as Mutombodzi began to counter-attack.

What followed was an extraordinary innings given the nature of the conditions and some very good seam bowling from Kew.

Mutombodzi and ex-England international Aftab Habib produced a partnership of 140 for the eighth wicket that was as good as anyone has seen on Cross Green.

Habib finished 66 not out and Mutombodzi eventually fell for 91, having totally turned the game and enabled Eversley to post 224-9 from their 52 overs.

The Boars knew the strong Kew batting line-up was well capable of chasing down the total, but Mutombodzi was not finished as he and Dyer put the squeeze on with the old ball.

Despite the loss of early wickets Kew continued to play positively and with 12 overs remaining they needed 62 with five wickets in hand. However, a run out by Matt Brown – who had already made a useful unbeaten 17 – turned the match.

His superb fielding accounted for Kew captain Nathan Pearce and this gave Eversley a way back into the match.

With Mutombodzi finishing with 5-61 and Dyer picking up three wickets, Eversley eventually bowled Kew out for 207.

The Boars will aim to make it back-to-back wins when they visit Marlow on Saturday (1pm).

Theale & Tilehurst snatched a dramatic one-wicket win at home to Eversley 2nds in a low-scoring Division 4b classic.

The visitors elected to bat but suffered an appalling start as James Bozarth (5-37) bowled their top four cheaply, and it was only a fine Steve Jordan (40) knock which helped The Boars to 113 all out.

Jeremy Hammond (3-15) reduced T&T to 71-4, but a fifth-wicket stand of 35 seemed to have put the game to bed.

However, they then suffered a horrendous collapse as Gareth Cummings (3-7) and Sam Glaze (2-39) ran riot – five wickets falling for five runs – before Chris Lemm took his side over the line in the most nerve-jangling of finales.

In Division 7a, an inspired Eversley 3rds annihilated Wokingham 4ths by 128 runs.

Paul Ager (55) Jack Sever (69), Matt Martin (64no) and James Berger-North (46) were all among the runs as The Boars smashed the ball to all parts in a huge total of 267-4 from just 38 overs.

Raj Acharya (47) showed some fight with the bat for Wokingham, but he lacked support as they were routed for 139. Andrew Hogston (4-47), Martin (2-17) and Berger-North (2-11) were the pick of the Eversley bowlers.

Eversley 4ths had the better of a draw against Theale & Tilehurst 3rds in Division 8a.

Jon Last (57) and Vajay Nawal (50) helped The Boars to a total of 219-9, and two wickets apiece for Tony Critchley and Anup Urath restricted T&T to 171-5.
