Leader: In the end it is down to donors

THERE is no shortage these days when it comes to finding new causes for complaint.

Traffic, banks, phone hacking, pensions, petrol prices, spending cuts and even that old favourite the weather are right up there.

But our story on Ray Dollery's 21-year wait for a kidney certainly puts all those very genuine issues in perspective.

He eloquently conveys the "nightmare" of spending more than 13 hours a week connected to a dialysis machine. And few of us would enjoy the prospect of never having a holiday lasting longer than a weekend.

Mr Dollery doesn't, however, seek our sympathy. He is just stating the bald fact that, despite the giant leaps taken by medical science almost by the day, it all comes down to the simple fact that the number of relevant donors simply doesn't match the need.

That 96% of us say we support the National Donor Organ Register but only 29% have joined it, will surely tweak some consciences. Call 0300 123 23 23, www.organdonation.nhs.uk or text SAVE to 84118
