A boutique cinema could be built as part of the shake-up in leisure facilities, it has been revealed.

Land near Carnival Pool could be turned into a cinema after a public consultation showed 50 per cent of respondants wanted screens in the town.

The plans, which have yet to be finalised, could see meals and drinks offered to movie goers creating a go-to destination.

A provider might be lined up as soon as March with Elms Field a proposed spot, As part of the plans to improve leisure facilities in Wokingham a consultation has been launched this week.

The facilities off Wellington Road could be served by a 500-space multi-storey car park that serves the pool, bowling alley and fast food outlets. Plans show a storey reaching over the roof of the bowling alley.

The alley and swimming pool are set to be given a make-over to create a leisure complex.

Cllr Philip Mirfin, executive member for regeneration and communities, said: “We’re proposing that some space on the site could be used to improve and expand the existing leisure facilities at Carnival Pool.

“Ideas could possibly include a new indoor sports facility, a bigger gym or flexible spaces for the community for things such as exhibitions, meetings, concerts and sports clubs. But this is just our thinking, we now want to know what improvements the local community would like to see.

“In a previous survey 50 per cent of people wanted a cinema in the town and that’s something we hope to show you in the future.” Funding for the redevelopment will be provided in part by a loan from the Local Enterprise Partnership to provide essential infrastructure.

The Borough Council want to hear the public’s views on what should be built at the site.

The proposals can be viewed either online at www.regenerationcompany.co.uk or in person at special viewings at Market Place between 10am and 3pm on Thursday, February 12 or Carnival Pool between 12pm and 7pm on Tuesday February 17.

The consultation will run till Friday March 6. The council will then begin drawing up detailed designs for the car park and refining the layout of the site.
