The unconventional performances formed part of the town’s annual Living Advent celebrations, a 24-day countdown to Christmas Day, with an act performing in a different venue every evening.
Starting on December 1 with singing and dancing outside the town hall, the acts over the month remained a mystery until the moment they took the stage and included performances from choirs and a re-telling of the Christmas story.
Chair of the town council’s arts and culture committee Gwyneth Hewetson said: “We’ve had good turnouts at some things. The decorating of the Christmas tree was great and I think we had around 250 people there, and the ballet at the Methodist Church was lovely. They’re my personal favourites.
“Unfortunately, the weather was unseasonably mild but I think we are sharing that with the rest of the population.” A live nativity held on Sunday 21, billed as 'the big one’ by Ms Hewetson, proved a Yuletide success, and sparked some Christmas cheer, while the final event on Christmas Eve held at St Paul’s Church was a fitting ending to a successful month of arts and performances.
Ms Hewetson said she hoped the Living Advent returns next year.
