The station link road, opened by the borough council yesterday (Tuesday), leads from Reading Road to the car park and station.

However, the new route’s junction with Station Road remains closed to vehicles for a “few months”, according to the council, while work is complete though no date has been set for it to open. That side of the link road is cyclists and pedestrians.

Also as part of a range of ongoing improvements, action is planned to tackle the bottlenecks around Wokingham station level crossing; there is often heavy congestion at the junction where Wellington Road, Barkham Road, Station Road and Oxford Road meet. This will include making Station Road one-way going towards the station, restricting traffic turning at certain points and re-phasing traffic lights in the area to ease flow.

Work to improve the Shute End junction with Station Road is also planned.

However, the timing of this further phase of work will be subject to talks between Wokingham Borough Council and Network Rail though no timescale or dates have been given.

Referring to the partial opening of the station link road, Cllr John Kaiser, executive member for planning and highways at Wokingham Borough Council, said: “This is an exciting stage of this project – the unveiling of this much-awaited and important new road, and the start of the process to remodel traffic flow in and around the station to ultimately ease congestion.

“But please bear with us for the next few months as there will be further delays while we build the next stages.

“We will do all we can to keep these delays to a minimum, and will keep you up-to-date with our traffic management plans so that you have all the facts when you make your travel plans.” Staff from Wokingham Borough Council will be on hand at the station over the next few days to give out leaflets to passengers outlining the changes and posters have been displayed on the platforms.

The railway station building itself was rebuilt last year in a £6m revamp.
