Cllr UllaKarin Clark in her second year of office, has decided to do ‘something completely different’ by forming a ‘cultural partnership’ and a fund in association with the charity More Arts Wokingham.

After hearing stories from youngsters in deprived areas she decided that many young people needed help in their chosen careers.

She told colleagues that she was ‘really moved’ by some of the stories she heard.

After fundraising events this year, including golf days and Christmas carols, the pot could be as much as £10,000.

In her first year as mayor she handed over a similar sum to the charity Building for the Future.

Her charity fund is aimed at talented 14-19 year-olds without the resources to reach their potential.

The mayor would like to hear from young candidates themselves as well as recommendations from teachers, parents or guardians with a view to choosing successful applicants next May, when she hands over the mayoral chains of office.

Successful candidates can expect to receive one-to-one mentoring in their particular artistic discipline, such as painting, acting, singing, dancing and photography, as well as support in accessing futher education.

More Arts Wokingham is an independent charity that champions all artistic forms, promoting and delivering arts and cultural activities in and around the borough.

Cllr Clark said: “Creativity and arts should not be restricted to the privileged few. The charity works closely with all communities in the borough.

“This year I would like to champion one or more young people who are already showing exceptional talent and would like to go on and shine in their chosen field.” Gwynneth Hewetson, chairwoman of the charity, said: “More Arts is an essential and supportive partner that can help provide education and transformation, contributing to people living healthier and happier lifestyles.

“We aim to make culture and the arts a part of their everyday lives.”
