He had previously been elected as leader of the ruling Conservative group last month, and was last night chosen to as leader following a full council meeting.

He has been a Wokingham Borough Councillor since 2006 and has served as an Executive Member for various portfolios for the past seven years.

Cllr Baker, who represents Coronation ward - has lived in the borough most of his life and also serves as the Leader of Woodley Town Council.

Cllr Baker takes over as leader of the council from Cllr David Lee.

At the same meeting, Cllr UllaKarin Clark was chosen to remain as Mayor for another year, with Cllr Parry Batth the Deputy Mayor.
