The council has been recognised by the Royal Town Planning institute’s (RTPI) Planning Excellence Awards, in the Local Authority Planning Team of the Year category.
The criteria for the award includes using ‘imaginative’ approaches to achieve quality developments, and the ability
to mange multiple projects to customer satisfaction.
The council’s work on its four Strategic Development Locations – sites of future large housing schemes – was noted as delivering major growth within the borough in a ‘controlled’ way.
Heather Thwaites, director of environment at the council, said: “The RTPI has recognised that we are rising to the challenge of supplying much-needed housing in good developments that will become strong communities – and doing so without damaging existing residents’ quality of life.
“But it is the end product that matters and the real success will come when the homes, roads, schools, community centre, play areas, nature reserves and sports facilities are built in the coming years, and the new communities begin to share the great quality of life enjoyed in the borough.”
The winners are due to be announced on June 23 and Mark Cupit, the team’s head of development delivery, said: “This recognition is well deserved by the team.
“We are managing un-precedented growth and infrastructure projects on
a larger scale than ever before.”
