Drink-driving figures in Berkshire down on last year
Published: 23 Dec 2013 17:30
Between December 1 and 11.59pm on December 22, 73 people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in Berkshire against 82 during the same period last year.
Thames Valley Police’s ‘Is it worth the risk?’ campaign - which runs until January 1 - is targeting drivers under the influence of drink or drugs on the way home from nights out or the morning after a heavy night before.
In Reading, 22 people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving from December 1 to December 22, compared with 25 during the same period last year while the West Berkshire figure was down from seven to five. In Wokingham there were six arrests, up by one.
In the whole of the Thames Valley, there was a 4% increase on the 2012 figure, from 199 to 207.
In total 114 drivers were charged, 36 bailed pending further inquiries and 30 released without further action. Out of the 207 arrests, 34 were in the morning.
Chief Inspector Henry Parsons, of the joint Hampshire and Thames Valley police traffic unit, said: “It’s worrying that some people are still making the wrong choices, deciding to drink and drive when there are alternatives available.
“Drink driving is dangerous and it kills or seriously injures many people each year, devastating families.
“I’m grateful for the public support for this campaign that has helped us to be in the right places, at the right times to make these arrests. We’ll continue to target drink drivers every single day of the year, not just during campaign periods. It isn’t worth the risk.”
