Mr Mason, who works for Murrill Construction Ltd in All Saints' Close, Wokingham, said: "It was a real honour to be nominated for an award, so to actually win one is great.

"It's a privilege to have my hard work recognised, and I'd like to thank the training staff at the NCC for their help and support."

Mr Mason beat off the challenge of Mario Scinto, also from Wokingham, who finished as runner-up in the same category.

The pair were presented with their awards by NCC director Andy Walder, and broadcaster and former Olympic athlete Colin Jackson.

Speaking at the awards - held at the college in Birmingham last month - Mr Walder said: "We are extremely proud of everyone who was nominated or who won an award at this year's event, which is a great way to celebrate the achievements of our young workforce.

"The awards have allowed the NCC to showcase the young talent it helps to create year on year - bringing fresh blood to the construction industry. The National Construction College is run by CITB, the leading construction training provider in Europe, and is committed to delivering qualifications to meet the current and emerging needs of the industry.

"Trainees such as Matt and Mario are testament to this, and we wish them continued success in their chosen career."

As well as Matt and Mario, 36 other nominees were commended for their outstanding efforts in 15 categories including scaffolding, roof slating and tiling.
