A GROUP of visitors had the luck of the Irish when they made an emergency stop at a park and ride to bring a "beautiful" baby girl into the world.

The travellers were driving along the M4 on their way back to Dublin after a whistle stop tour of the UK when a heavily pregnant woman went into labour. The convoy immediately pulled into the nearest available spot at the Loddon Bridge Park and Ride, in Winnersh, before a group rushed her to Basingstoke Hospital in a car. The tired travellers then set up camp for the night in the disused car park, which has been closed because of flood fears.

Sister of the lucky mum, Bridget, said: "We had to pull over for my sister because she went into labour last night while we were on the motorway. We were just intending to pass through but it was an emergency and we had to get her to hospital as quickly as possible."

"She went to Baskingstoke hospital and at 5am this morning she had a beautiful baby girl."

"We'll be gone in a few days when she's well enough to travel again. This place is closed anyway and we're not doing anyone any harm by being here."

Police were at the site this morning take the names and number plates of the half a dozen caravans currently camped in the main car park.

Sgt Peter Clarke said: "We're here supporting the needs of the local community, supporting the land owner and the talking to the travellers to make sure we support the needs of all three groups."
