A CHARITY shop in Wokingham is appealing for volunteers as it aims to continue the good work that has secured the organisation an award.

Helen and Douglas House, in Rose Street, is one of the shops supporting the work of the charity, which provides hospice and palliative care to children and young adults.

The organisation was awarded the Charity of the Year trophy at the Thames Valley Business Magazine Awards in November in recognition of its hard work.

Helpers got their hands on the trophy as it travelled around the six Helen and Douglas House shops in Berkshire and Buckingham-shire as part of a celebratory roadshow.

Fundraiser Janet Carruzzo said the store was urgently seeking more people to help out.

She said: "It is a great opportunity to meet new people and gain new skills and experience." She added the shop also required donations of women's clothes.

Sandra Kemp, assistant manager of the Wokingham branch, said: "We feel so proud to be part of a charity that has won this prestigious award and to know that the work we do in the shop helps raise vital funds.

Without the support of people in our local community we would not be able to provide the service to the families who live in Berkshire and use Helen & Douglas House.

"We would like to thank everyone who voted for us and all our customers."

Judges presenting the award said the charity demonstrated a continued level of outstanding commitment to its charitable aims and objectives and had "exceptional people doing outstanding things for exceptional people".

l To volunteer at the shop, pop in or call 0118 979 4349.
