A NEW restaurant hopes to support the community by giving meals to two day centres and offering artists exhibition space.

Wokingham Gourmet Kitchen (WGK) is preparing to open on Tuesday, February 7, and co-owners Robert Tang and Simon Wan plan to help WADE day centre in Reading Road, Wokingham, and Woodley Age Concern through their 'Smiles 4 Miles Foundation.' For every 10 meals that are sold in the restaurant in Finchampstead Road, one meal will go back into the day centres.

Mr Tang said: "We are not a chain, we are a group of local family members who are looking to give something back to the community.

"It is a traditional English menu. Our main ethos is using local produce as much as we can." The restaurant is also working with Twyford Art Group and other Wokingham artists by offering them a free opportunity to showcase their work.

Mr Tang said: "We are supporting the community by allowing local artists to exhibit their work for free. It makes the restaurant look nice and helps the artists." He added that the artists who are involved so far have agreed that 10% of the sale of any of their artwork will go back into their foundation.

The restaurant is hosting a VIP evening on Monday, February 6, and will open to the public on Tuesday, February 7.
