A WAR HERO will be remembered in the Mayor's annual Christmas card which has been designed by school children.

Captain David Hicks MC, who was from Wokingham Borough, tragically lost his life while serving in Afghanistan 2007 and posthumously awarded the one of the greatest military honours, the Military Cross- for his courage and heroism in the line of duty.

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the death of Captain Hicks and the theme of the card, 'helping others at Christmas time', celebrates the way he lived his life.

School children from all around the borough entered the competition and the winners were judged partly my Captain Hicks parents.

Mayor of Wokingham Borough, Councillor Rob Stanton said: “I was honoured to be able to run the competition this year with the support of Alun and Lesley, parents of Captain David Hicks MC.

"We had a huge number of entrants in all three categories, and the standards were very high. Well done to Zelia, and everyone else who entered.”

The overall winner of the competition was Zelia Fernandes from Winnersh Primary School, who was presented with a certificate and £1,000 for her school.

The two runners up from Robert Piggott Primary School, and St Nicholas Hurst Primary School, will also receive a certificate and £250 each for their schools.
