A LACK of clarity from the council has led to a major event in the town centre being cancelled due to the redevelopment works.

The Wokingham Wine Festival has  been scrapped this year due to the ongoing works in the market place and town centre.

The Festival organisers have suggested a lack of clarity from the council is to blame for the 10th anniversary event being cancelled.

The festival is held every year in December, with funds raised going to the Reading and Wokingham branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The Association of Small Direct Wine merchants (ASDW) runs the festival with the Wokingham Round Table, and released the following statement.

“After 9 successful years The Wokingham Wine Festival held in the old Town Hall is part of the cultural fabric of Wokingham. It has a loyal following and raises much needed funds for the local MS Society.

"Unfortunately due to the lack of clarity regarding the state of the Market place in December 2017 then proper access to the Town Hall for both Wine Merchants and those attending cannot be guaranteed.

"The 10th Event scheduled for Saturday 16th December has been cancelled due to the uncertainties regarding the condition of the Market Place and the current poor access to the Town Hall for both Wine Merchants and those attending."
