A GOLF club has handed a major boost to disabled youngsters aiming to make it big in the sport.

Sand Martins golf club in Wokingham has handed scholarships to two young players who tee-off regularly at the 18-hole course.

The scholarships were given out to children who have visual or hearing impairments, or physical or learning disabilities, with the aim of encouraging them to play and enjoy golf.

Liam Fuller, 16, was the first to receive his scholarship, providing him with complimentary junior membership of the golf club and practice facilities.

He said: "The lessons are fun, and I learn a lot."

Sebastian Kini, 11, also received the award at the special ceremony on August 23.

The award is supported by the Golf Foundation and England Golf, and will allow for the children to have the opportunity for a mentor and supported integration int the junior programme and its competitions.

The scholarship means the club will commit to the children the full use of the club's facilities, an internal golf handicap based on their ability, and all the help and guidance required for their continued development.

The scholarships will last until each child is 21 years of age, meaning Sebastian will have ten years at the club before it expires.
