Wokingham Town Mayor Cllr Peter Lucey tried his hand at gardening at a special allotment open day.

The Fifth annual allotment open day at Wokingham Town Council’s Ormonde Road site was the setting for Cllr Lucey to observe the hard work of local gardeners.

More than 180 gardeners work at the allotment, and the mayor recognised their hard work, and encouraged others to participate as well.

Cllr Lucey said: “If you like the idea of growing your own food then allotment gardening could be for you. It does require some hard work but from what I saw the results are more than worth it, so do contact the Town Council for more information.

“Special thanks to Jenny Gilbert and Pauline MacBrayne from Wokingham Horticultural Association for their invaluable contributions to the success of the day. It was a real team effort to promote and set-up the open day.”

David Green, a Wokingham beekeeper, brought along a section of one of his hives to demonstrate how the honey is produced, as well as selling the honey on the market stalls.

The event was organised by the Wokingham Horticultural Association (WHA) to coincide with the National Allotment Society’s ‘Allotments week’, promoting the benefits of allotment gardening.

The WHA set up a selection of stalls for gardeners to showcase and sell their produce.
