A multi-million pound investment will revolutionise Wokingham's market square, it's been announced.

Wokingham Borough Council have announced that a £3.8m investment will be made between Wokingham Borough and Town Council to completely revitalise the town's market square.

Wokingham market square is a parade of open market stalls outside The Courtyard in the centre of town, with a bus lane running around the side.

Work will begin on July 31, and will be completed in late Spring 2018, meaning that almost the entirety of Wokingham Town centre will be being worked on, as the Wokingham shopping development continues.

At the moment, Wokingham Town centre is currently undergoing massive work to add in a hotel, shops, and 190 homes in the middle of Wokingham, meaning one of the Peach Street lanes is closed.

Denmark Street will subsequently be closed throughout the duration of this development, while Cllr Chris Bowring insists people should carry on as normal.

He said: “The whole town including Market Place is open for business and will remain so during these works. There will be some short-term disruption but we would urge all residents to continue to support the town’s great shops, cafés, pubs, restaurant and other businesses.”

The Wokingham market will be temporarily moved to outside Argos and Brown Bag, just down the street from the Gig House, and all market stalls will still be open.

The council has assured residents that traffic will still be able to flow through Wokingham, though the roads around the market place will need to be closed.

First, Denmark street will be closed, meaning traffic will be forced to go through Broad street, and then the works will switch and the closures will be reversed.

Cllr Peter Lucey, Mayor Wokingham Town Council, said: “I have been a Wokingham Town Councillor for many years, and this project, a long-term ambition of the town council, is also dear to me personally. I am really pleased to finally see the project agreed, signed off - and starting.

"We are delighted to be working in partnership with Wokingham Borough Council to deliver a beautiful and renewed market place, to benefit our whole community, at the heart of our town.”
