A DISCARDED cigarette butt thrown from the window of a block of flats caused a fire.

At around 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 5 a small blaze broke out in some guttering at the apartments in Woosehill, Wokingham.

Crews from Wokingham and Wokingham Road fire stations rushed to the scene near Reading Road and used a ladder to get to the fire.

A spokesman for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue said: “We got called at 7.35pm to a fire in some guttering.

“I have spoken to the officer in charge and he says it looks like it was caused by a cigarette in the guttering.

“It looks like someone in the flat above may have discarded it from a window, it then caught in the items in the guttering.

“The fire crews removed the guttering and a couple of tiles around it. They checked inside the roof to make sure the fire didn’t spread and made it watertight before leaving.”

Crews took around an hour to make the scene safe. Nobody was injured.
