THE barriers at Wokingham's level crossing are now being operated manually after they broke earlier today.

The crossing barriers began to malfunction, getting stuck half-way up before the crossing's safety systems locked them down, blocking motorists.

Tobby Higgins, a spokesman for Network Rail said the gets began to fail at 4.05 this afternoon.

He said: "The barrier stopped lifting properly and started going halfway up and stopping.

"When that happens they lower to the road side and obviously traffic starts to build up.

"We've got some guys out there to fix it and operating the barriers manually."

He said the barriers should be working normally in the near future.
