A POPULAR Wokingham pub has reopened its doors following a five day voluntary closure after breaching a licensing condition.

The Redan on Peach Street closed its doors on Thursday, October 1 and they remained shut until Tuesday, October 6.

In a statement on the pub's Facebook page the landlord, Andrew Rogers, wrote: "I Andrew Rogers Landlord of The Redan bar in Wokingham hereby would like to officially apologise to the police responsible for Wokingham and the surrounding areas.

"A Facebook post was uploaded onto The Redan's page which was wholly inappropriate, and not the view of The Redan.

"As a result of our breach of our licensing conditions we have agreed to voluntarily close the premises until such point as we satisfy the police and local licensing authority that we are able to adhere to all of the conditions of our premise licence."

Mr Rogers refused to comment further when approached by The News.

Speaking on Tuesday a Greene King spokesperson said: “We have supported our licensee at the Redan while he has worked hard to be completely compliant with all the conditions of his licence, and as a result the bar is now able to re-open as normal later today.”

Peta Stoddart-Crompton, a spokeswoman for West Berkshire County Council, who oversee trading standards in Wokingham borough, said: "Following discussions regarding The Redan's licence, they have proactively taken the decision to close their doors voluntarily until such time as the matters are resolved to the satisfaction of Thames Valley Police and the Licensing Authority."

The Redan was one of three buildings on Peach Street to be spared the chop in the Borough Council's plans to regenerate the town centre. The Haka, The Redan and the Marks & Spencer were spared from demolition in a planning application submitted earlier this year.

It's not yet clear what condition of the pub's license was breached.
