THE Liberal Democrat opposition was 'swept away' in all the seats contested. Even South Lake and Twyford two seats held by the Liberal Democrats before the election fell to the Conservative's march.

Prue Bray, leader of the Liberal Democrats in Wokingham, said: "I think we have been swept away in the elections by a lot of people who didn't want an SNP and Labour government so they voted conservative.

"I don't think there's anything we could have don locally about it."

Four candidates from the council's executive all won their seats, including John Kaiser, Paul McGee-Sumner, Anthony Pollock and Philip Mirfin.

Keith Baker, leader of the conservative party said: "I'm extremely pleased that all out sitting councillors on the borough council have been re-elected with pretty good majorities.

I'm especially pleased we were able to take South Lake as Laura Blumenthal is one of the youngest councillors. Twyford was a real bonus."

He said the strong showing nationally was partly responsible for the success locally but also credited the hard work of the local party.
