About 20,000 people will descend upon Wokingham on Bank Holiday Monday, when carnival games, colourful stalls, food outlets and a range of other activities will fill Elms Field, Denmark Street, Market Place and Erfstadt Court, with roads through the centre of Wokingham set to be closed for the event.

Billed as one of the largest street fairs in the south of England, a selection of variety acts will grace a stage set up in Market Place, before the Military Wives Choir round off the afternoon.

A petting zoo will feature among the new attractions this year. The event, organised and run by the Wokingham Lions Club, is free to attend and will run from 10am-5pm.

Organiser and Lions Club member Paul Bailey said: “We are really hoping the good weather will stay with us. It has been quite a long process as we have been in the planning stages since September, but fingers crossed that everything and everybody is in place. We are raring to go now.

“It is always a fantastic event and I think we have now found a winning formula so I would encourage everyone to come along.” The Morgan Recreation Ground in Crowthorne will once again play host to the annual Crowthorne May Fair, which is organised by St John the Baptist Church parishioners. Opening a couple of hours earlier this year and running from noon-4.30pm, there will be extra attractions to suit teenagers in addition to the usual live music, stalls and fun and games.

For teens there will be a dunk tank carnival game, a graffiti artist area where they can design their own graffiti on a piece of canvas to take away, and also a tug-of-war competition.

Organiser Paul Bailey said: “I think all the events are pretty much sorted now and we have lots of dance troupes this year which is great. I am hoping those April showers can hold off for a little while longer! I am sure it will be a fantastic day as it usually is. Everyone is welcome and there is lots of fun to be had!” A birds of prey show, Maypole dancing and fairground rides will be on the programme when the Winkfield Row May Day Fair rolls into Carnation Hall once again on Monday.

Taking place from noon-4pm, there will be a range of fun activities for both young and old, while a bumper raffle could see some lucky visitors scoop prizes such as £100 of garden vouchers, premier Ascot raceday tickets and restaurant vouchers.

All profits from the day will go to local causes, with some of the cash from this year’s pot going towards a planned new war memorial in Chavey Down.
