A member of staff at the Co-op in London Road was was punched in the face by a young white male after a short scuffle as he tried to retrieve the stolen goods on Tuesday, December 11.

The staff member was not injured, but police are appealing for information from shoppers who may have witnessed the incident - which took place around 5.35pm.

The offender is a young white male, believed to be in his late teens.

He had short, dark coloured hair styled into a quiff. He was wearing a dark green coat with beige coloured fur on the hood and skinny blue jeans.

Investigating officer PC Paul Bentley said: “The store was busy at the time with a number of members of the public coming and going and a number of them queuing at the till point. I am appealing for anyone that may have witnessed the assault on the member of the staff to come forward and contact police immediately via 101.” Anyone with information about the incident should contact PC Paul Bentley via the 24-hour enquiry line 101.
