This round of construction will create a cycle lane on each side of the A329 between the Showcase Cinema roundabout and Winnersh Crossroads.

The final development will see a cycle lane running across the entire length of the A329 across the borough, from Coppid Beech roundabout, Wokingham to Three Tuns crossroads in Earley.

John Kaiser, executive member for planning and highways, said: “With more than 4,000 cycle movements a week in places along the A329, this isn’t just a major route for vehicles. This work will make it safe not only for cyclists for all ages, but everyone else using the road whether in a vehicle or on foot and, of course, we hope it will encourage more people to get on the saddle.” Phase two will connect Winnersh Business Park and The Forest School. The entire scheme is due to finish in 2016 and will connect five secondary schools to the cycle routes.

Bus shelters along the stretch being worked on will be replaced, footpaths resurfaced, existing cycle routes improved and two new Toucan crossings installed.

Work is expected to last between 12-14 weeks with most work being done outside the morning and evening rush hours. Some night closures will be necessary for resurfacing on selected junctions. Details of these closures will be published on Wokingham Borough Council’s website nearer the time.

The work is being funded by part of a £2.75m grant from Local Sustainable Transport and contributions from developers. The carrying capacity of the road will not be reduced by the development.
