Visitors to the South Hill Park Arts Centre on Saturday were given the chance to indulge in a range of homemade cakes and pick up Christmas gifts at a coffee morning in support of Myeloma UK.

The bone marrow cancer charity is trying to raise awareness of its support services to patients and their families, and the morning’s organiser Margaret Howe has arranged several fundraisers at the centre, where she also works.

Mrs Howe, from Crowthorne, was diagnosed with the terminal condition in 2005 and believes fellow patients should approach the charity for help. She said: “It’s been a lovely day. We’ve had quite a lot of people through and everyone has been working hard.

“We want people to come forward and talk to the charity because, even though it is managed with treatment, it is a terminal illness.

“There’s no cure for it, and people can get very worried when they are told the news.” Visitor Kirsty Burns, from Sandhurst, said: “It’s something a bit different really. There’s quite a few nice things on sale and the cake is delicious.” For more information about Myeloma UK, go to myeloma.org.uk or call 0131 5573332.
